In the 1950s, 70 percent of the food consumed by Montanans was locally grown. Today, just 15 percent of the $3 billion in food consumed in Montana is local. The rest is shipped in, usually frozen, and learning about the farm or ranch where it came from is all but impossible.
Our Mission is to bring natural, grass and grain finished, locally raised and processed beef directly to your home or restaurant. Natural beef is a hormone and drug free alternative to commodity beef. These cattle have never left the state of Montana. They come from Southwest Montana ranches and are processed in state certified plants. This beef is tastier and healthier, and it is ours. In the very truest sense of the word, this is Montana beef.
Montanans needed more options for healthy eating. Many Montanans also want to keep traditions alive while simultaneously preserving our environment and view sheds. Our ranchers are the best stewards of our land. By buying Montana Black beef, you will be supporting our Montana ranchers, the environment, and our view sheds while taking good care of your family’s health.
Montana Black prices are calculated using the Ranchers’ First pricing model. This is a formula that calculates local processing fees, sales and re-investment costs, and viable live weight prices paid directly to local ranchers. Through this not-for-profit program, you will be protecting our environment and supporting sustainable ranching in Montana.
The prices detailed below equate to a $1.05 fat cattle live weight price for our local ranchers. Ask your rancher friends how this price compares to the commodity beef market.
